Official Giraffe Hop on Hop Off

The Official Giraffe Hop on Hop Off tour is a home-grown company that offers two daytime routes, a night route, a boat route, and a walking tour, with 46 stops to explore in total. Their tours are available in an impressive 22 languages so, wherever you’re from, you’re likely to be catered for. Base tickets are available for 24, 48, and 72 hours, with the boat tour, night tour, and Green route as optional add-ons.

Red Line

This historical tour covers large parts of Pest and the river banks of Buda as well, with 19 stops including the opera house, Heroes’ Square, Margaret Island, and the Great Market Hall. The first bus leaves at 8.30 am and the final bus reaches Kálvin tér just after 8 pm. Please note that some stops are only available on weekdays. The full loop takes two hours and 40 minutes.

Green Line

This line takes you up the hill to Buda Castle and back down again. There’s not much else to it, but it’ll save you a long walk, and the view from the top of the hill is phenomenal. The full loop takes about 25 minutes and has five stops in total.

Night Bus Line

This route operates from 8.30 pm to 10 pm, and only hits each of the five stops once. It takes you on a tour of Pest, then up to Buda Castle before returning you to Városháza tér. The full loop takes an hour and a half.

Boat Route

This route runs once an hour from 10.30 am to 4.30 pm, and it only has two stops: the Blue River Dock 8a (on the Pest side of the Danube) and Margaret Island, which is the ideal spot for leisure activities and swimming in summer. The loop takes 55 minutes. In the evenings the boat route runs at 7.30 pm, 8.30 pm, and 9.30 pm, but these trips are only panoramic trips, there’s no stop at Margaret Island. Unlike the bus tours, the boat route is only narrated in English and German.

Walking Tours

Official Giraffe offers ticket-holders a free walking tour which leaves the Opera daily at 10 am. The tour takes between two and two and a half hours, and customers are reminded that it’s still recommended to tip the guide.

Blue Route

This route is a short shuttle that takes visitors up to the top of the hill in Buda so that they can see the castle and the Matthias Church. There are three stops: the castle’s funicular at the bottom of the hill, the citadel at the top of the hill, and the castle garden. The full loop takes 30 minutes and buses depart every 30 minutes from 9.30 am to 6.27 pm.

Night Tour/Purple Route

This tour is a panoramic bus tour of the city after dark, so you can’t hop on or off. On it you’ll see Heroes’ Square, Buda Castle, and you’ll get an amazing view of the Hungarian Parliament building from the opposite river bank. The bus departs daily at 8 pm from the stop near St. Stephen’s Basilica and the entire route takes about 60 to 70 minutes depending on traffic. River Route

This boat ride is usually panoramic, with visitors boarding at Petőfi Square, Dock Nr 10 and returning to the dock an hour later. From May to September, some tours also include a stop at the Margaret Island so you can disembark and explore. Boats depart every hour from 10 am to 6 pm, and you can enjoy English or German commentary as you enjoy your cruise up and down the Danube.

Night Route

The purple or night route is an hour and 50 minutes long and takes you on a trip around the areas of Budapest which are beautifully lit up after dark. The tour departs from the stop at St. Stephen’s Basilica nightly at 7 pm, finishing back there at 8.50 pm. The tour is panoramic, so there’s no hopping on or off, but it does stop for a 10-minute photography break at Heroes’ Square.

Walking Tours

Tickets include two free walking tours! The first, the red umbrella tour, explores Pest in an hour-long tour that departs from the St. Stephen’s Basilica bus stop at 5.40 pm every day. The yellow umbrella tour starts at Clark Ádám tér and ends at the Fishermen’s bastion an hour and a half later. It covers Buda and the castle district, and guests should be aware that they’ll have to do at least 8 minutes of steep uphill walking. Yellow umbrella tours leave at 11.30 am and 2.30 pm daily.
