Schloss Leopoldskron is a former palace in southern Salzburg, built by a Prince-Archbishop of Salzburg in 1736. In 1918 it was purchased by Max Reinhardt, a founder of the Salzburg Festival, who used it as a hub for artists until the rise of the Nazis meant he had to flee to the US. The house was confiscated under the Third Reich’s anti-Semitic laws but was returned to the Reinhardt family after the war, who gave permission for it to be used as a set in The Sound of Music. It’s generally closed to the public, but you can visit with a themed tour!
