There are several excavation sites of prehistoric temples in Malta and Gozo. Visiting them is one of the best undertakings on the island. The Temple of Tarxien was discovered by chance only in 1914 by farmers, the site dates back to the Neolithic period according to archaeological research. Ħaġar Qim includes the ruins of four different temples from the so-called Mġarr phase (ca. 3800-3600 BC) of Malta's early history. Directly nearby is also Mnajdra, an even older cult site. On Gozo you can visit the Ġgantija temples, which have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1980, longer than the other megalithic temples in Malta.
