Embark on a Guided Tour from the Top

Start your visit of the Eiffel Tower at the top. When we talk about the top, we of course mean the viewing platform at a height of 906 ft (276m). The actual height of the Eiffel Tower has been 1,083 ft (330m) since March 2022, but visitors are not allowed to climb up to the antenna.

How to Get to the Top

The highest floor of the Eiffel Tower is only accessible via elevators. There is a staircase with 1,665 steps; however, it is not open to the public. The staircase extends from the east pillar of the Eiffel Tower to the top, replacing the original, much more dangerous staircase with 1,710 steps.

Details about the 3rd Floor and the Top

The platform is located at an altitude of 906 ft (276m) and has an area of 2,691 sq ft (250m²). Above it, there's an open-air platform. This platform can only be reached via stairs and is secured only by steel grating. The entire area can accommodate up to 400 people.

The View

From the top of the Eiffel Tower, in the best weather conditions, you can see as far as 50 miles. Thereby, you can discover not only many landmarks of Paris, such as the Louvre Museum, the Arc de Triomphe, the Champs-Élysées, or the Moulin Rouge, but also the Charles de Gaulle airport, the Parc des Princes (Paris Saint-Germain stadium), the suburbs, and the entire landscape beyond Paris. Additionally, there are plaques that point to major cities around the world and indicate the straight-line distance from the Eiffel Tower.

BUT BEWARE: In uncomfortable weather conditions, like strong wind, or in case of excessive crowds, access to the top may be restricted!

Discoveries on the 3rd Floor

Once at the top, you can treat yourself to a sparkling glass of champagne at the Champagne-Bar. Gustave Eiffel's office has been faithfully recreated. In it, you will discover wax figures of Gustave Eiffel, his daughter Claire, and Thomas Edison. In the recreated scene, the three are trying out a phonograph (audio recorder) that the American inventor Thomas Edison brought as a gift for the tower's opening.

The Antennas of the Eiffel Tower

Above the visitor platforms, there's a beacon at 968 ft (295m) height emitting light in all directions, synchronized in such a way to simulate a continuous cross. The lowest antennas on the tower serve as directional antennas at 955 ft (291m), above which lie the dipole antennas (for radio frequencies) at 965 ft (294m). Even higher are several double-dipole antennas at 997 ft (304m). Further up, there are UHF antennas. The tower's tip is further crowned by dipole antennas, meteorological measuring instruments, and a maintenance platform. The antennas make the Eiffel Tower reach a total of 1.083 ft (330m). There are over 120 antennas on the Eiffel Tower, transmitting radio and television programs.

Expansion and Inclination

During a storm, the Eiffel Tower sways. The largest sway was recorded during a storm in 1999 when the Eiffel Tower swayed about 13cm from its resting position. With strong sunlight, the Eiffel Tower can expand. According to calculations by Eiffel, the tower could expand up to 70cm. However, the record so far is 18cm in the summer of 1976. The side that is exposed to the sun expands more than the sides that are not.
