The Architecture
The ArtScience Museum impresses not only with its internal beauty but also with its external shape. Designed by the visionary architect Moshe Safdie, the lotus shape reflects not just elegance but also an inviting openness that encourages visitors to enter a world of wonder.
Sustainability was also considered in the project: rainwater is collected in the center of the building and channeled through the bowl-shaped roof into a reflecting pond at the lowest level. The collected rainwater is then used for the building's toilet facilities.
The circular base and the ten 'fingers' of the lotus flower house 5,000m² (53.820 ft²) of exhibition space. Each of the ten fingers has roof windows or skylights that enable sustainable lighting of the galleries. Because of the ten fingers, the building is also called 'The Welcoming Hand of Singapore'.
